Description
CANADA Dominion of Canada Rifle Association 44.5mm silver medal 42.17 grams Leroux 1600, Charlton 1705-20-1 Variety 2
There are three types of D.C.R.A. shooting medals, and with the first type four different versions based on manufacturer. They were originally manufactured by Elkington & Co in London UK, then by P.W. Ellis & Co in Toronto, and still later by Henry Birks & Co. The example being offered does not have a manufacturer's name, but the Charlton catalogue speculates that this was done by Elkington since their later issues show increasingly fainter lettering due to die polishing.
Obverse: two soldiers shaking hands; the crowned arms of the four provinces in the background, VIS UNITA FORTIER (Trans: Strength Stronger In Unity)
Reverse: PRESENTED / BY THE / DOMINION OF CANADA / RIFLE ASSOCIATION / 1868
