Description
NOVA SCOTIA Halifax 1970 Canadian Numismatic Association 40.4mm bronze medal 36.86 grams (CNA-17B)
The Halifax Coin Club hosted the 17th CNA convention at the Hotel Nova Scotian from August 5th to 8th. The medal designed by A. Mitchell MacDonald, Collins Baugild and the Wellings Mint staff depicted the H.M.S. Shannon which made naval history on June 1, 1813, when attached to a British squadron based at Halifax. The Shannon engaged the U.S.S. Chesapeake, a larger and more heavily armed frigate, in one of the shortest sea battles - lasting only fifteen minutes. The Shannon was victorious and took the Chesapeake in tow back to Halifax Harbour. The dies are in the Nova Scotia Provincial Archives. There was a mintage of 500 bronze medals
