Description

NOVA SCOTIA, Halifax Dalhousie University 45mm bronze medal 42.69 grams. Although this piece does not have a manufacturer's mark, other examples of the medal are documented where the edge is marked BIRKS

Dalhousie University was founded in 1818 by George Ramsay, the ninth Earl of Dalhousie and the then Nova Scotia Lieutenant-Governor. Legal recognition of the college did not happen until 1821, and it's first graduating class to receive degrees did not occur until 1866 after a restructuring. Difficult to ascertain when the medal was in use, but it does have a an early to mid 19th century look to, and Dalhousie has gone through other variations of a similar design since this medal.
