L’Union Saint-Joseph de Saint-Hyacinthe was founded in 1874 under the direction of Father Louis-Zéphirin Moreau. The fundamental idea behind the company was to organize mutual aid in the broadest sense of the term. It protected families when one of its members became ill or died by making relief payments for their support. The movement was based on the principle of a cooperative society with a dual national and religious purpose. With growing urbanization and industrialization, its objective was first and foremost to meet the needs of the working class, as professionals were not admitted.
